Coursework: Summer Project 2025

 Summer project tasks

Complete the following tasks on a blogpost on your Media blog called 'Summer Project: coursework planning':

1) Research: Music videos

Watch the following music videos and analyse an aspect of media language for each one:

Music video 1: Marshmello x YUNGBLUD x blackbear - Tongue Tied

How is narrative used in this music video to engage the audience?

The narrative in Tongue Tied is used to engage the audience by utilising music video conventions which create exciting visuals through practical effects, camerawork, CGI, lighting and editing, the fast pace of the video matches the tempo of the song creating the illusion that the audience is there experiencing what happens at the scene, allowing viewers to vicariously live through the narrative. Enigma codes such as the device and what it does and why the rioters are trying to protect it also goads the audience further on to find out the answer to their questions.

Music video 2: Years & Years - I Wish I Knew

How is camerawork and mise-en-scene used in this video? Use CLAMPS to remember the different aspects of mise-en-scene.

The closeup shot at the start of the music video is a type of camerawork that gives the audience the impression that the singer is directly addressing them, this way they can view all of the emotions on his face which will provide them with vital context in order to understand the underlying themes of the music video. This shot of the man's face, freshly wet from tears, continues on for a long time before it cuts, adding a layer of realism to the camerawork. The mise-en-scene of the set decorations including bunting, confetti, bright clothing and bright lighting implies a celebratory setting, connotation themes of joy and excitement, however this is contradicted by the man's earlier expression. The movement of the camera accelerates to match the tempo of the beat before zooming out into a medium/long shot where the man's emotions seem to flip completely. As more of the set comes into view, more decorations associated with festivities enter the frame alongside the visual introduction of different instruments, putting emphasis on this idea of celebration through multiple different angle shots. As the song slows near the end, a slow motion shot is used to indicate the approaching conclusion by paralleling the music's speed.

Music video 3: Foals - Hummer

How is editing used in this music video to engage the audience?

The editing at the start of the video is fast paced and cuts to each note that the instrument plays to draw the viewers attention before honing in on the singer, where it switches from different shots, some that are still and others that are hand-held at a variety of alternating angles. It then cuts to one long continuous still scene of the singer dancing before switching over to another scene where each individual band member walks in front of a spot-light. The use of these different length shots engages the viewer by presenting new information at each interval. Another long still scene commences as each band member stands still before the peace is interrupted through hectic playing demonstrated at multiple angles, juxtaposing the previous serenity in an explosive manner. This chaotic play style remains for the duration of the video where the pace exchanges in order to keep the audience interested.

Music video 4: Your choice

Select a music video of your choice and analyse an element of it e.g. narrative, camerawork, editing, visual effects etc. If you're not sure which video to use you could watch some of the following:
You may also want to look a completely different, creative approach to music video - such as these Lego stop motion productions and how they use narrative:
Music Video: Ariana Grande, 7 Rings, mild profanity

2) Music video planning

Plan out the basic details for your music video. What song do you plan to use? Will your video be performance or narrative based (or both)? Complete the following on your blog:

Artist and song you have chosen: Sade- Like a Tattoo

Plan for music video (narrative/performance etc.): panning the camera over to places that have litter and having the actor clear it up, once the place is clean other actors are shown enjoying the public space

Link to brief (one small step to improving your community): Cleaning up litter from local spaces and the importance of keeping parks clean and tidy so that everyone may enjoy them

Actors/performers you plan to use: Friends from school and potentially myself including my dog

Locations: Northala & Rectory park

Costume/make-up/props required: Standard dressing, trash bag for collecting litter, flowers

3) Statement of Intent

On the same Summer Project blogpost, write the rough first draft of your 300-word Statement of Intent for the two-minute music video you plan to create. The final draft of this document will be submitted to the exam board alongside your music video production and is worth 10 marks of the overall 60 marks available.

Guidance and minimum requirements can be found in the AQA brief from their NEA Student Booklet.

We also strongly recommend you look at our Statement of Intent questions to consider document too.

statement of intent for magazine

My magazine will cover an influencers book about the importance of travel and keeping an active healthy lifestyle. In it ,ideas on improving mental health will be explored in depth, alongside how reconnecting with nature is scientifically proven to have massively  beneficial effects on the psyche, it will also stress how integral things such as regular movement are for not only our body but also our minds. The influencer will advertise the book as an autobiography self-help hybrid and will feature her travels around the world.
The cover will feature a large serif typography title alongside a photo of the main subject which is the influencer celebrity talking about their book, this will be clarified in the sub-title. The colour scheme will consist of natural, earthy tones to fit the travel theme, however, because the magazine is targeted at younger adult / teenager audiences, 'gossip' circulating around the latest most popular celebrities will be featured on the headlines which will namecheck those who are relevant to spark interest and make the magazine to appear as more "exclusive". To some degree the magazine will be lightly politically charged as it is aimed at a upper middle - middle middle working class as travel is a luxury that requires quite a bit of money, however the influencer will be careful to provide alternatives to travel in order to remedy this and to expand the demographic that will read her book. The theme of "improving health" will be reinforced through the advertisment of plant based products on the cover as the magazine is aimed at those who exercise or are trying to get into shape.
